One of the easiest ways to save money on Interstate Car Transport is by doing your research and comparing car transport quotes.  There are a number of ways that auto movers calculate the cost of moving vehicles around Australia and by identifying the factors that help reduce the cost of transport; you will be able to help reduce the overall cost of your auto move.

Use the internet to compare

The internet has become the go to for finding information we are after, many tools have been developed that can help us compare the cost of car transport.  It is important to compare at least 5 different auto transport companies, compare the cost, compare the service and compare the experience.

Be flexible

If you are able to do without your car for a longer period of time, then there are savings to be made.  Car transporters do have to prioritize jobs and their routes, so being flexible and waiting for trucks to be filled to capacity will reduce the cost of transportation. There may be times when they have to delay you shipment due to other customers who have chosen express services, however it usually pays dividends to be flexible which can significantly reduce the overall cost.

Drop off and depot service

Dropping off your vehicle at the transport depot will provide some sort of discount, if you have the time to opt in for this service, it will help reduce the cost.  Transporters do charge for the convenience of door to door vehicle transport, so in order to save a bit of money, get a family member or friend to give you a ride to/from the depot.

Don’t go with the cheapest option

It is often a bad idea to go with the company that is offering a significantly lower quoted price than other vehicle transport businesses. These are the companies that often have hidden fees and charges, bad track records, poor customer reviews and can cause the most amount of heart ache.  A business is in business to make a profit and if they are offering prices lower than the rest, then they will have to either cut costs in other areas, whether it be customer service, quality of equipment or reliability.

Why do prices fluctuate with auto transporters?

When it comes to car transportation, unlike other services in various industries, the price to carry out the service can greatly differ from one day to the next. When there is a requirement to move a vehicle from one state to another, it can attract many variable factors that are in a constant state of fluctuation. This can be frustrating for consumers as the cost is one of the major concerns when it comes to deciding to transport or not.

What are the factors?

The type of vehicle to be transported

For someone who requires a luxury or a classic car to be transported, these are typically high value assets and require extra care when being moved. Owners may consider having these cars transported in enclosed car carriers which provide extra protection but reduce the maximum number of cars that can be carried in any one time. The average family sedan and smaller cars are much cheaper to transport compared to larger and heavier SUVs, people movers and modified four wheel drives.

How far it needs to be transported

It’s probably no surprise that the number of kilometres between where it is moved from and where it needs to be greatly affects the price. A vehicle that needs to be transported between suburbs is likely to cost less overall, however may incur a higher cost per kilometre, whilst a vehicle being transported interstate will cost more overall but will have a lower cost per kilometre.

Car transport door to door, depot to door or depot to depot

Door to door transport is usually the most expensive but can be the most convenient. Is hassle free and you don’t have to worry about all the other things that vehicle transport may involve. Depot to door is when you are able to drop the car of at the depot ready for transport, this can be a more affordable option but you will need to make arrangements after you drop your car off.  Depot to depot is the least expensive option; you’ll have to make your way to the depot which is not always conveniently located.  You can incur expensive storage fees if you are unable to collect your car. Also, a depot may be several hundred kilometres away from you, which can add travel costs for you to get to the closest depot.

Cost of fuel

Prices of fuel change on a daily basis and vary between cities to city. Due to the daily fluctuating fuel prices, vehicle transporters are constantly monitoring fuel surcharges.

Urgency and flexibility

The need to transport a car from one location to another is always changing; being flexible will always help the costs of car transport.  Car carrying companies are always juggling, prioritising jobs and planning routes. For someone who requires an express delivery service, it will inevitably cost more of a premium that those who opt in for standard services.
