MEETING OF THE MINDS. The #NCStateVetMed pilot alumni mentorship program has been a rousing success, connecting more than 35 current students with 12 alumni mentors for learning, laughing and critical relationship-building. “I’m so proud of them," says alumni mentor Dr. Jay Chambers, NC State CVM Class of 1987. "Just being with them, getting to know them, understanding some of their challenges and being able to help with those challenges, it’s very rewarding. THE FOREMOST FARRIER. Dr. Raul Bras was the epitome of "show me" learning when he shared his world-renowned expertise in horse hooves with the #NCStateVetMed students in the farrier selective. Knees on ground. Hands on horses. “We definitely need more equine vets, and this is such a great opportunity to learn from Dr. Bras because he is amazing,” says Isabelle McMullen. An increasing recognition of complex equine foot issues led #NCStateVetMed to recruit Bras to elevate the college’s expertise in hoof health and its partnerships with the equine community in North Carolina. REPTILE RESEARCH: Eastern box turtles, North Carolina’s official state reptile, are common patients at veterinary clinics and wildlife rehab facilities. They often need to be sedated or anesthetized for vet visits, but until recently no published research existed on the most effective ways to do so. Last year, #NCStateVetMed Class of 2024 alumnae Dr. Ashlyn Heniff and Dr. Rachel Carpenter made history by publishing the first paper evaluating sedation protocol in Eastern box turtles and discovering a more effective drug combination and administration method for these reptiles. YOU DID IT! 🎓 Over 100 #NCStateVetMed students from the Class of 2024 turned their tassels at Oath and Hooding and walked off the stage and into the next phase of their lives. During the challenges and triumphs of their degree programs, these new DVMs and Ph.D.s formed enduring bonds with the people and places that make the @ncstate College of Veterinary Medicine home. “I don’t want to leave the life that we’ve built here, but we’re also really excited for what’s next,” said DVM graduate Megan Gremling.
