In the 1990s Earlwood's famous Turnell Place Botanical Gardens hosted the world's first battle of the sexes fight between Earlwood Hotel regulars Ted 'The Stomper' Johnson and the pub's First Lady, the Maori Mauler.  Stomper's classical style never stood a chance against the Mauler's ferocious ground and pound

THURSDAY 7th MARCH - NRL TIPPING COMP

The Earlwood Social Golf & Euchre Club, a magnet for under-performing golf and euchre players from Earlwood and surrounds, is again hosting Fatcat's innovative 1. 'NRL Tipping Competition With A Difference'.  An $80 entry fee, which must be paid prior to the start of the competition, ensures participants a season of weekly angst.

There are a few things that make this competition stand apart from all the others.  The first is so very simple and yet fiendishly difficult - you don't make a selection in every game.  WTF !?!  On a normal weekend, you 'only' need to pick 2. 6 winners from any of the 8 games.  These 6 picks are known as your scratch selections.

Second, another class of selections is added to the mix - handicap selections.  The underdog in each game is given a points start and you must select a further 4 winners, again from any of the 8 games, taking the starts into account.

Besides the major prizes, there are 3. 11 opportunities during the season to win some cash.  And finally, Fatcat conducts an entertaining, professional and most importantly a transparent competition as evidenced by the fact last year nearly half of the tipsters (49 of 105) had been playing for 20 years or more and 64 had been involved for at least 10 years.

1. Although sharing sporting, pseudo-celebrity, gambling interests and greatly admiring the now defunct charity's business acumen and chutzpah, Fatcat's 'NRL Tipping Competition With A Difference' was regrettably never associated with The Shane Warne Foundation.  However, in a step up from registered charity status, the Earlwood Securities Exchange has accepted our bona fides as an accredited Tier 1 Ponzi Scheme

2. Too easy to just pick 6 scratch winners?  Over a select period of 21 weeks last season and with 105 tipsters each round there were only 19 occassions when all 6 selections won i.e. less than 1% per round

3. Based on the 2023 competition

SATURDAY 18th MAY - THE ALWAYS LEAVE YOUR HAT IN THE LION'S DEN TOUR

Like every one of the past 35 years, the ESG&EC will soon pack up it's bag of tricks, multiple decks of Queen's Slipper playing cards, golf sticks and 4. Scanlen's footy cards and travel up to the NSW Central Coast to conduct it's week-long festival of sport and provide solace and cheer to the 5. good burghers of The Entrance.

To assist players with their preparation, the club offers voluntary but extremely popular pre-tournament 1, 2 or 3 day sea-level acclimatisation and hydration programs run by the self-accredited industry leader in hydration theory (but certainly not practice), The Shearman Institute.

4. Visit the 'NRL Tpping' area of this website to see our extensive collection of 1980 Scanlens footy cards

5. Not to be confused with Jose-Mumma Olazabal, a rather bad burgher

WEDNESDAY 22nd MAY - EUCHRE WORLD SERIES

The lesser tournament of the week, the World Series of Euchre is played mid-week at The Entrance Euchredome.  The knock-out event is held after Wednesday's races and begins with the all important draw for partners conducted under the Blue '6 Card' Sheedy B.Eu (Hons) protocol.  '6 Card', who threw in his hand for the final time in September 2023, was the Earlwood Euchre University's professor emeritus.  According to the wily old matchmaker's protocol, last year's winners, Seve Hemosteros and Edwardo Romero, will start at long odds to team up let alone go back to back.

OCTOBER - MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Dating back to 1989, The Championship is the ESG&EC's second major tournament.  Once famously described in Federal Parliament as ".. combining the pomp, ceremony and tradition of a British royal coronation with the appalling drunken behaviour of Munich's Ocktoberfest patrons ..", the tournament continues to draw record fields and boisterous crowds to the challenging Cooks Peninsula links course, the R&A Marrickville.

The defending champion, *Dick Faldo, headlines the expected international field of *Kipper Parnevik, Seve Hemosteros, Garry Mize, *Java Haas, *Grantief Goosen, Boo Boo Weekley, *Peard Fulke, *Bourkie Baird, *Muzzy Zoeller, Berman DeChambeau, Karrie White, *Davidson Love, *Edwardo Romero, Thongchai JD, *Bluey Dunk, *Ford Funk, *Soldier Montgomerie, Hunter Meehan, Danny White Shark, Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson, *Tubby Waldorf, *Notah Kelly III, Lewis Oosthuizen and Ralphy McIlroy competing for the prestigious Stephen Angry Anderson Trophy (*past champion).
